Hot Days, Cool Treats!

As the temperatures rise, it can be a challenge for pets and their people to stay cool. Of course, there’s always ice cream! While some dogs do just fine with their people’s sweet treat, why not try one of the suggestions below to avoid tummy troubles all together!

For the canine in your life, try Frosty Paws (available in vanilla or peanut butter) or Yoghund (available in apple cheddar or papaya peanut butter)! Found in most local grocer’s freezer sections, these treats come in packages of four for less than $5.00! It’s fun watching your pal get to the bottom of the cup!

Cats also love a cool treat: Try freezing ice-cube size portions of their favorite wet food! Or, drop a few ice cubes in their water dish!

Let’s Take the Dog Out in Monmouth County!

Let’s Take the Dog Out!

Summertime at the shore means one thing: OUTDOORS! In Monmouth County, there are a bunch of dog-friendly places for dogs and their people to enjoy together!

The off-leash dog park at Thompson Park in Lincroft is a great option for pups who like to run! There are “large dog” and “small dog” areas and water fountains when your pet needs a drink. Pros: great for dogs who like to play with others; open every day from 8am to dusk; easy waste disposal! Cons: not enough shade (so not good on a very hot day); can be a little muddy and buggy after a good rain 🙁 [click to continue…]

Valentino – Cat Adoption – Monmouth County SPCA, NJ

Name:     Valentino

Age:        10 years old

Sex:         Male

Breed:     DSH

Can you say loverboy?! My name is Valentino and I’m a major mushball who absolutely loves people!!!! I’m uber affectionate and just absolutely wonderful and purrfect, which makes me the ideal starter cat for someone looking for a special needs feline. You see, I am diabetic. I am extremely fortunate that a Good Samaritan found me fending for myself outside. I was obviously someone’s beloved house cat at some point but, for whatever reason, I ended up outside, hungry and cold, all by myself. Diabetes can be an easy-to-manage condition but, had I been left untreated out there, I could have quickly perished. So you can see how grateful I am to have ended up at the Monmouth County SPCA!!!! Cassidy – Cat Adoption – Monmouth County SPCA, NJ

Name:     Cassidy

Age:        5 years old

Sex:         Female

Breed:     DSH

Hi, everyone! My name is Cassidy and I am fun, friendly and front-declawed! I am about 5 years young. I came to the Monmouth County SPCA because my human mom had to move back in with her parents and one of them was allergic to me. So, here I am at the shelter waiting for my forever family to scoop me up and take me home!

I readily admit that I don’t do great with change. Losing my home and people and then ending up at an animal shelter was overwhelming for me. I was terrified and I kind of shut down. I did not want to be touched and I didn’t want to eat. I was so stressed and all I wanted to do was to be back in a loving home. [click to continue…]

Thinking Spring! A Minty Treat For Your Special Pup

A Minty Treat recipe For Your Special Pup

With spring on the way, we couldn’t help but get excited about using some in-season ingredients in our dog’s goodies. The Daily Bark blog provided inspiration with one herb we sometimes neglect: mint. Read on for an easy treat idea that helps battle any problems with doggy breath!

Ingredients:

  • unsalted soup or oyster crackers
  • fresh mint leaves
  • water, room temperature

Instructions:

Crush crackers and place in one dish. Finely chop the mint and place in another dish. You are looking for a ratio of about one part mint to three or four parts cracker but please experiment! Combine the cracker and mint then add enough water to have the ingredients stick; form into 1/4-inch balls. Place the balls onto wax paper and store in freezer. Once firm, the treats are ready for your pet to enjoy!

Merlot – Special Needs Dog Adoption – Monmouth County SPCA, NJ

Name:     Merlot

Age:         1 year old

Sex:         Female

Breed:     Terrier mix

Hi! I’m Merlot and I am a 1 year old terrier mix who is ready to find a home to call my own. I am not your average gal as I am special…I am deaf!!!  I was lucky enough to find a special foster family who has experience with deaf dogs and they are teaching me hand signals so I can communicate with them without hearing them. I’m doing great as I have already learned to sit, stay, down, and come just from hand signals!!!

I am an active girl who loves to play, especially with my canine friends.  We love to play together and then we often crash together on the couch for some snuggle time. I love my human friends too and often try to climb in their lap and give them kisses! [click to continue…]
