National Mutt Day: Embrace Your Inner Mixed Breed!

“We like all mutts and we cannot lie, some purebreds can’t deny, that when you see that fuzzy little face and that tail wag at fast pace, you’ll have fun!”

Ok, ok, so your mutt might not appreciate your creative re-writing of classic radio tunes, but otherwise there’s no denying the appeal of our mixed breed furry friends. Whether your domain is dominated by an imperious Chihuahua-Dachshund or a Husky-Shepherd is begging for another round of ball at your house, mutts certainly give us all the joys of pet ownership, but without the sky-high costs that come with purchasing pedigreed purebreds. For National Mutt Day, let’s look at all the reasons why mutts rule and purebred dogs drool!

They May have Fewer Health Issues!

Certain types of purebreds are more likely to experience diseases like hip dysplasia and other hereditary disorders. Mixed breed dogs are thought to be more resistant to disease and less likely to inherit all the problem-causing genetics from their purebred parents, a phenomenon called hybrid vigor.

They’re More Versatile!

Mixed breeds tend to be more moderate and flexible in personality; their temperament and drive to do a specific job isn’t as ingrained in them as it would be in a dog like, well, a Border Collie. This flexible nature allows mutts to adjust more easily to different situations, and it’s also the reason why mutts all over the world have entered and excelled at various canine professions.

They’re Unique!

Your mutt is one-of-a-kind; there’s nowhere on Earth where you’ll find a pooch exactly like yours! Purebreds tend to be somewhat similar from dog to dog, since they’re bred to fit a specific standard of conformation and temperament, but mutts have no such restrictions.

They’re Easily Available!

It can be tough to purchase a purebred dog – many breeders have long screening processes and even longer wait times for their puppies. There are mixed breeds everywhere, however; a mutt to suit your style might be found in the animal shelter right down the street, no wait needed.

They’re Grateful!

Since mutts may not have the best start in life, many of them seem to have hearts that are bigger than big; sometimes it even seems like they have the best of all their combination of breeds when it comes to personality.  Mutts can be just as loyal, loving, intelligent and driven as their ‘upper crust’ cohorts.

Yes, mutts can certainly make fantastic companions, working dogs, and, of course, great pets. Look beyond their questionable canine heritage, stop searching for a pedigree, and allow a marvelous mutt into your life today!
