Pet Fire Safety Tips

July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day. No one thinks that a fire will ever happen to them, but it is always good to have an emergency plan in place. Here are some tips to help you incorporate your pets into your family’s fire safety plan.

  1. Obtain a pet alert cling to place in the windows on the front of your house. You can write the number and type of pets on the cling, so firemen know there are animals inside.
  2. Choose a family member to be responsible for your pet. If you have multiple pets, you may want to assign each one to a different family member. This way, if a fire does break out, your pets will be accounted for.
  3. Keep collars, leashes and pet carriers in an easily accessible location. The last thing you want to do is scramble to find these items when a fire is raging in the house.
  4. Know your pet’s favorite hiding spots. Scared pets could retreat to a secluded place upon hearing the smoke alarm or smelling the smoke. Since you only have minutes to get out, spending as little time possible searching for pets is best.
  5. Be sure to do periodic testing of your smoke alarm batteries. You may want to consider a remote home monitoring service that can call for help as soon as possible when the smoke alarms are activated.
  6. Hold fire drills so that everyone knows their part in case of a fire.

Pet fire safety is not difficult; it is just something that many people do not think about. Using these hints and a little common sense can go a long way to protecting your pets in case of an emergency.
