Summer is here, and that usually means plenty of outdoor activities for you and your pets. While fun in the sun is an excellent way to stimulate your dog’s senses, it can pose dangers if you are not careful. Here are some summer safety tips to help keep your pet out of harm’s way this season.
- NEVER leave your pet in a car
Even with the windows cracked open, temperatures inside a car can easily reach 120°F within a matter of minutes. This could create a deadly situation, and is not worth the risk to your pet’s health.
- Access to cool areas
Be sure to give your pet plenty of breaks in the shade to cool down. If you do not have shady areas in your backyard, bring your pet inside to an air conditioned room, or let him plop down in front of a fan.
- Access to fresh water
Plenty of fresh, cool water is also essential on hot days. Be sure the bowl is not in direct sunlight and consider purchasing a special bowl that will keep water cold for up to 8 hours.
- Avoid hot asphalt
Hot pavement and asphalt can become scorching hot in direct sunlight, which can create painful burns on your dog’s foot-pads that will need medical attention.
- Walk at dawn or dusk
The coolest parts of the day are early morning and late evening. If your pooch can’t live without his daily stroll, wait until these times to enjoy the great outdoors.
Following these basic tips will help you and your pets have a great summer this year!
