SHREWSBURY – Two months ago, Scott Brandle received a call that a person’s dog had hurt its leg and needed transportation to a veterinary hospital. The owner called every local pet care establishment in the Ocean County area, but had no luck with their predicament.
“They called anyone and everyone, but could not find a service to transport their pet,” said Brandle. “Fortunately, the Little Silver Animal Hospital, who deals with us referred him to us. After we understood the details of the predicament, we made the decision to travel to the owner’s home, lifted the dog into our car and transport it directly to the vet where it received the proper attention.”
Tatum Park is only one of the great parks in the Monmouth County park system. Fall is a great time to explore all the activities available!
We’re lucky to live in Monmouth County, don’t you think? We get the beach, the woods, the seasons … life IS good! As the cool weather approaches, we love getting back to lots of outdoor activities. If you’re new to the area or just looking for an alternative to your local park, check out the Monmouth County Park System for some ideas!
One of our favorites is Tatum Park in Middletown. With access from either Holland or Red Hill Roads, there’s more than six miles of trails to explore. For your four-legged friend, there’s opportunity to get muddy, frolic in a stream or two, and chase a variety of wildlife. The meadows are particularly beautiful with the fall foliage. Consider packing a picnic and enjoying the afternoon!
As the temperatures rise, it can be a challenge for pets and their people to stay cool. Of course, there’s always ice cream! While some dogs do just fine with their people’s sweet treat, why not try one of the suggestions below to avoid tummy troubles all together!
For the canine in your life, try Frosty Paws (available in vanilla or peanut butter) or Yoghund (available in apple cheddar or papaya peanut butter)! Found in most local grocer’s freezer sections, these treats come in packages of four for less than $5.00! It’s fun watching your pal get to the bottom of the cup!
Cats also love a cool treat: Try freezing ice-cube size portions of their favorite wet food! Or, drop a few ice cubes in their water dish!
Summertime at the shore means one thing: OUTDOORS! In Monmouth County, there are a bunch of dog-friendly places for dogs and their people to enjoy together!
The off-leash dog park at Thompson Park in Lincroft is a great option for pups who like to run! There are “large dog” and “small dog” areas and water fountains when your pet needs a drink. Pros: great for dogs who like to play with others; open every day from 8am to dusk; easy waste disposal! Cons: not enough shade (so not good on a very hot day); can be a little muddy and buggy after a good rain 🙁 [continue reading…]
Can you say loverboy?! My name is Valentino and I’m a major mushball who absolutely loves people!!!! I’m uber affectionate and just absolutely wonderful and purrfect, which makes me the ideal starter cat for someone looking for a special needs feline. You see, I am diabetic. I am extremely fortunate that a Good Samaritan found me fending for myself outside. I was obviously someone’s beloved house cat at some point but, for whatever reason, I ended up outside, hungry and cold, all by myself. Diabetes can be an easy-to-manage condition but, had I been left untreated out there, I could have quickly perished. So you can see how grateful I am to have ended up at the Monmouth County SPCA!!!! It’s no secret that pets love the outdoors! Longer days are the perfect excuse for spending lots of time together in the backyard or garden this spring!
Aside from fleas, ticks and other pests, we often forget that there are plants that can cause skin irritation or sickness in our pets. We know keeping your pet safe is top priority so we’ve put together a short list of garden “dos and don’ts” on plants common in Monmouth County. For a more comprehensive list, visit http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/poison-control/Plants?[continue reading…]
Hi, everyone! My name is Cassidy and I am fun, friendly and front-declawed! I am about 5 years young. I came to the Monmouth County SPCA because my human mom had to move back in with her parents and one of them was allergic to me. So, here I am at the shelter waiting for my forever family to scoop me up and take me home!
I readily admit that I don’t do great with change. Losing my home and people and then ending up at an animal shelter was overwhelming for me. I was terrified and I kind of shut down. I did not want to be touched and I didn’t want to eat. I was so stressed and all I wanted to do was to be back in a loving home. [continue reading…]
Hi, my name is Rocco and I am search of a new family to call my own.
I came to the Monmouth County SPCA after my owners had a new baby and no longer had time to care for me. My friends here tell me I am a terrier mix. I am a young 9 years…and I do mean young, as I have lots of play left in me! I especially love my toys, so much so, that I like to take one on every walk with me! (After all you never know when you will have the opportunity to play, so you always have to be prepared lol!). [continue reading…]
Hi there! My name is Feather and I am a friendly, gentle and sweet 5 year old young lady. I love to be petted and snuggled. My human friends tell me that I’m an absolute sweetheart and that whatever family adopts me will be very lucky!! I am an easygoing gal, and I’m always in a good mood. In fact, people often comment that it looks like I always have a smile on my face! And that smile will get even bigger if you decide to take me home!!!! [continue reading…]
Hi, friends! My name is Butterfly and I came to the shelter as a really shy stray dog. As I started to make friends with the shelter staff and volunteers, I came out of my shell and grew into the beautiful Butterfly that I am today!!! I LOVE to play with other dogs! I am so good at adapting my play style to that of whatever dog I’m playing with that I have become the official “helper dog” for my canine friends at the shelter. [continue reading…]
